If your internet provider goes down but your home's router and Wi-Fi are still running, an iPhone on that same home network can often control local Apple Home accessories. That includes many accessories using HomeKit—Apple's local accessory protocol—or Matter, a shared smart-home standard that also uses the local network. Apple documents direct local communication with HomeKit accessories, while an Apple TV or HomePod home hub can pass local HomeKit and Matter commands. That design makes outage control possible; it is not a promise that every product or feature will work.

Anything that needs to leave the house over the internet will stop. That normally includes controlling the home while away, vendor-cloud devices, and online services used inside an automation. Apple also warns that network or internet problems can affect HomePod Siri requests and smart-home control, so voice should not be your fallback. The useful answer is therefore yes, conditionally: same-network control may survive an internet outage, while remote and cloud-dependent parts do not.

Internet outage is not the same as Wi-Fi outage. The internet connection, sometimes called the WAN, is the link from your router to the outside world. Your local network, or LAN, is the router and Wi-Fi inside your home. Apple Home can only use a local path if that inside network is still running.

What should still work during an internet outage?

Follow the control path behind one Apple Home tile

The same Home app can hide several very different routes. To predict outage behavior, start with one accessory and identify how its command travels. A home hub is an Apple TV or HomePod that coordinates remote access, automations, and some Matter or Thread functions. A bridge is a box or software service that translates a group of devices into Apple Home.

Native HomeKit accessory

A HomeKit accessory can communicate locally using Apple's HomeKit Accessory Protocol. If the accessory, phone, and required hub or bridge remain reachable on the home network, same-network control has a local route. Setup, account services, firmware updates, notifications, or a maker's extra features may still use the internet.

Matter accessory

Matter also uses the home network for normal control. A Thread-based Matter device additionally needs a working Thread border router, such as a compatible Apple TV or HomePod, to connect its low-power Thread network to the rest of the home. Matter does not make the router, Apple home hub, bridge, account services, remote access, or the maker's separate cloud features unnecessary. Vendor bridge or cloud service

A lighting bridge can be local while a different vendor's integration depends on its servers. Sometimes the Apple Home tile keeps working but the vendor app does not; sometimes both stop. Check the maker's current documentation for the exact model and connection method. The key question is not only “Is it in Apple Home?” but “Does this command reach the device without leaving my house?”

Home Assistant Bridge

Home Assistant's HomeKit Bridge can expose Home Assistant devices and controls to Apple Home over the home network. During an internet outage, those tiles can remain usable if the Home Assistant server is powered, the devices can still find one another on the home network, and the original integration—the connection Home Assistant uses to talk to that device—is local. A cloud-only thermostat or switch does not become offline-capable merely because Home Assistant passes it to Apple Home.

Run a safe five-minute internet-outage test

Do not wait for a storm to discover which controls depend on the cloud. Test only an internet outage—not a whole-home power failure—and choose low-risk devices.

  1. Tell everyone in the home. Do not test active locks, garage doors, alarms, smoke or carbon-monoxide devices, medical equipment, emergency lighting, or the only camera protecting an occupied property.
  2. Confirm the manual fallback. Keep physical keys, ordinary switches, and the vendor's documented manual controls available. Leave the router, Apple home hub, bridges, and Home Assistant server powered.
  3. Disconnect only the internet feed. Use the router or provider app's documented internet-pause control, or disconnect the router's WAN cable from the modem or fiber terminal. Do not unplug the router, reset equipment, or handle bare fiber. If the equipment is unfamiliar, skip this step and use the provider's instructions.
  4. Keep the iPhone on home Wi-Fi. Open the Home app and try two or three non-critical lights or plugs. Note which accessories respond and whether the result changes after a minute.
  5. Try one simple automation. Use a local motion or contact sensor and a non-critical light. Do not assume the result applies to automations using location, weather, notifications, or a vendor cloud.
  6. Check the failure paths. Try Siri, then turn off Wi-Fi on the iPhone briefly and check remote control over cellular. A failure here is expected and confirms that the remote or voice path is different from same-network control.
  7. Reconnect and document. Restore the internet feed, wait for services to recover, and write down what worked. Re-test after replacing a router, home hub, bridge, or major accessory.

If Apple Home says “No Response” while Wi-Fi is still up

Start inside the house before blaming the internet provider. Confirm that the iPhone is on the normal home Wi-Fi rather than a guest network. Check that the Apple TV or HomePod, accessory bridge, and Home Assistant server are powered and reachable. Guest networks and some separated smart-device networks can block the local messages devices use to find one another.

Then inspect the underlying accessory. If a direct HomeKit or Matter light works but a bridged device does not, the bridge or its original integration is the likely dividing line. If everything recovers as soon as the internet returns, at least one part of that route was probably cloud-dependent. That is useful evidence, not proof that every Apple Home accessory needs the cloud.

For a Home Assistant bridge, verify Home Assistant itself first, then the connection it uses for the original device. Keep the Apple device and Home Assistant on networks that are allowed to communicate with one another. Which Apple Home automations are most likely to survive?

A basic schedule or local sensor-to-light automation may continue if the home hub and every device in the rule remain powered and reachable. However, Apple does not publish one blanket promise that every Home automation runs without internet. Treat offline automation as something to verify in your own home, not as a feature guaranteed by the word “automation.”

Look for hidden online steps: a weather condition, a person's location, a push notification, a cloud camera event, a vendor scene, or an accessory reached through an online API. One online dependency can stop the useful result even when the home hub is still running. Ignore old advice about the previous Apple Home architecture

Apple ended support for the previous Apple Home architecture on February 10, 2026. Apple's current support page says a HomePod or Apple TV is needed for shared-home control and Home notifications, and that an iPad is no longer supported as a home hub. An old answer that relies on the previous architecture or tells you to use an iPad as the permanent hub is now stale.

This architecture change does not turn local accessory traffic into cloud-only traffic. It does mean current Apple Home guidance should use today's home-hub requirements when discussing remote access, shared control, notifications, Matter, Thread, or automation behavior.

Plan for useful control, not an “offline” label

Start with the few things that must work during an outage: ordinary lighting, a safe way through each door, heating controls, and any household-specific essentials. Give each one a physical fallback, keep the router and local hubs on appropriate battery backup if outages matter, and avoid putting a cloud-only service in the middle of a critical action.

A no-subscription smart-home plan can reduce cloud dependencies, but local control still needs power, a healthy router, working hubs, and a tested recovery path.
