The Short Answer: Choose Matter over Thread

For a normal Home Assistant installation, pair IKEA KAJPLATS as a Matter-over-Thread bulb. Matter is the shared smart-home control standard. Thread is the bulb's low-power local wireless network. A Thread border router is the always-on hub or radio that links that network to your regular Ethernet or Wi-Fi home network. This is how IKEA sells and documents KAJPLATS, and DIRIGERA is optional.

The direct path needs Home Assistant OS, a working Thread border router, and a phone running the Home Assistant Companion app for setup. It also uses two Home Assistant software pieces: the Matter Server app, which talks to Matter devices, and the Matter integration, which puts those devices into Home Assistant. Everyday light control stays inside the home without the IKEA cloud.

KAJPLATS also contains a community-discovered Zigbee mode. Zigbee2MQTT—community software that connects Zigbee devices to Home Assistant—now recognizes many KAJPLATS model numbers, but its own pages call this support unofficial. They warn that the Zigbee mode has reduced functionality, receives no KAJPLATS software updates over Zigbee, and could disappear in a future IKEA update. Reports for ZHA, Home Assistant's built-in Zigbee option, are thinner and depend on the exact bulb, software version, Zigbee USB adapter or hub, and its configuration.

So the decision is not “Which radio is always better?” It is “Do I want the supported product path, or am I willing to maintain an undocumented fallback?” Choose Matter for the first answer. Try Zigbee on one inexpensive, returnable bulb only if you knowingly choose the second.

What IKEA Officially Supports

IKEA launched KAJPLATS as a family of Matter-over-Thread bulbs, with socket shapes and brightness levels that vary by market. As of July 15, 2026, IKEA's US catalog includes concrete options such as the E26 450-lumen clear white-spectrum bulb, article 406.114.90; the E26 1100-lumen color-and-white bulb, article 306.114.62; the E26 1600-lumen white-spectrum bulb, article 406.113.05; and the GU10 517-lumen color-and-white bulb, article 806.114.74.

European stores use different sockets, including E27 and E14, and some product pages show slightly different lumen labels for otherwise similar positions in the range. Do not use an E26 forum success story as proof that an E27, E14, E12, or GU10 bulb will behave identically. Check the article number printed on the box and the regional IKEA product page.

IKEA's public support material calls KAJPLATS a Matter product and contrasts it with older TRÅDFRI Zigbee lighting. Product pages say phone and app control requires a Thread border router, with DIRIGERA given as an example rather than a requirement. IKEA also says a compatible Matter system from another brand can pair the bulb.

How to Pair KAJPLATS Directly to Home Assistant

1. Confirm the foundation. On Home Assistant OS, install or update the official Matter Server app and add the Matter integration. Confirm that Home Assistant has a working Thread border router. It also needs the Thread network credentials—the network name and password-like details—and your phone needs the same details.
2. Use a safe test lamp. Unplug the table lamp before installing or removing the bulb, let the bulb cool before handling it, then plug it in near the phone and within good Thread range.
3. Open the Home Assistant Companion app. Choose the option to add a Matter device and scan the QR code from the bulb or its paperwork. Bluetooth on the phone helps with pairing; it is not the bulb's everyday control path.
4. Keep the setup code. Photograph or store the original QR and numeric code somewhere private. The first Matter app can generate a new sharing code for a second controller.
5. Name and test the bulb. Turn it on, dim it, and change color temperature or color when the model supports those features. Then test an automation while the internet is disconnected but the local network remains on.
6. Share only after it is stable. Use Matter's “add to another controller” flow to add Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or SmartThings. Build schedules in one place to avoid lights firing twice.

If Home Assistant can see an Apple, Google, Amazon, or DIRIGERA Thread network but does not have its credentials, the network name alone is not enough. In the Companion app, open Settings > Devices & services > Thread. To import an existing Google or Apple network into Home Assistant, Android offers Configure > Import Credentials, while iPhone offers Send credentials to Home Assistant. Then make that network preferred. If Home Assistant created the network, sync in the other direction: Android uses Settings > Companion app > Troubleshooting > Sync Thread credentials; iPhone uses Send credentials to phone in the Thread integration.

When DIRIGERA Still Makes Sense

You do not need DIRIGERA for basic KAJPLATS control in Home Assistant. It can still be the right first controller when the IKEA Home smart app, IKEA support flow, or IKEA-managed firmware experience matters more than minimizing hubs.

One detail catches people: DIRIGERA's Matter bridge is mainly a way to expose compatible older IKEA devices to another platform. A native Matter-over-Thread KAJPLATS bulb is not automatically included just because Home Assistant added the DIRIGERA bridge. Pair KAJPLATS in IKEA Home smart, open its Matter sharing flow, and add the bulb to Home Assistant as another controller.

IKEA says basic home functions remain available without internet, while firmware, security, remote, and cloud-connected features can need an internet connection. That is different from sending every on/off command over the internet.

When the Community Zigbee Mode Is Reasonable

The community Zigbee mode is reasonable only when you already run a healthy Zigbee2MQTT network, understand that this is outside IKEA's support path, and accept a future reset back to Matter. Current Zigbee2MQTT definitions recognize many white-spectrum, color-and-white, and clear KAJPLATS variants. That means Zigbee2MQTT knows how to control those bulbs, but it is still not an IKEA promise.

Zigbee2MQTT warns that this mode exists for limited compatibility with older IKEA controls, uses reduced Zigbee software, and may disappear. Its pages also say KAJPLATS does not receive software updates while operating on Zigbee. Moving back to Matter for an update means resetting and pairing the bulb again. Home Assistant device names, groups, scenes, fade behavior, power-on behavior, and whether the bulb reconnects after power loss can differ from what you expect from a normal IKEA Zigbee bulb.

The entry sequence is not universal. Current Zigbee2MQTT pages describe a factory reset by switching the bulb off and back on six times, followed by a separate repeated off-and-on sequence for Zigbee mode; some KAJPLATS families say 12 repetitions and a clear-bulb page says 15. Follow the page for the exact family and model number rather than copying a sequence from a different bulb.

What about ZHA?

Some owners report that a KAJPLATS bulb paired with ZHA, while others report bulbs that would not pair, disconnected immediately, or behaved differently after changing Zigbee adapters. ZHA does not publish a KAJPLATS-specific compatibility promise. Treat ZHA pairing as an experiment, not a guarantee for every KAJPLATS model. Direct Remote Pairing Is Not Home Assistant Zigbee Pairing

IKEA's KAJPLATS manual documents a no-hub setup with a compatible IKEA remote: press the remote's pairing button four times, keep it close to the bulb, and pair for about 30 seconds. This gives you local button control without IKEA Home smart.

That direct link does not mean the bulb has joined ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT. It does not create a Home Assistant device, a Matter connection, or an Apple Home accessory. Think of it as a simple standalone lighting option. If you later want Home Assistant control, reset the bulb and pair it through the path you actually plan to keep.

Local Control, Cloud Use, Matter, and HomeKit

• Direct Home Assistant Matter: Everyday commands and automations stay local. Home Assistant Cloud and an IKEA account are not required. A vendor or platform may still use internet access for firmware, remote access, voice services, or extras.
• DIRIGERA: Basic local behavior can continue without internet, but the IKEA path adds a hub and app, and some updates and remote features need internet.
• Apple Home: KAJPLATS joins as a Matter accessory. It is not using the old HomeKit QR path. Add it to Apple Home first and share to Home Assistant, or pair to Home Assistant first and share to Apple.
• HomeKit Bridge from Home Assistant: This Home Assistant feature shows one of its devices in Apple Home and can be useful for the unofficial Zigbee route. It is not Matter's multi-admin sharing, and Apple controls the Home Assistant copy rather than holding its own Matter connection to the bulb.
• Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings: All can be additional Matter controllers when the specific platform has a compatible Matter hub and Thread border router. Their voice and away-from-home services may rely on their clouds even though Home Assistant's own control remains local.

What to Avoid

• Do not assume every KAJPLATS is the same. Match the socket, article number, lumen rating, region, and firmware before relying on somebody else's result.
• Do not call community Zigbee an IKEA feature. IKEA's supported specification is Matter over Thread.
• Do not build duplicate automations. A sunrise routine in Home Assistant plus another in Apple Home or Alexa can make the same bulb appear unreliable.
• Do not confuse a Thread border router with a Matter controller. The border router moves messages between Thread and the home network; the controller operates the bulb. The setup needs both functions, even when one hub provides both. Seeing a Thread network does not guarantee Home Assistant has its password-like details.
• Do not throw away the Matter code. Keep the original code even after pairing, and use a freshly generated sharing code when adding another controller.
• Do not buy dozens before a real-room test. Test power recovery, wall-switch habits, range, groups, color behavior, and family acceptance for one week.

Buy KAJPLATS for its advertised Matter-over-Thread path. Pair one bulb directly to Home Assistant when Home Assistant will own the automations, then share it outward only to the platforms the household actually uses. This provides local control without requiring DIRIGERA and avoids scattering schedules across several apps.

Choose DIRIGERA first when IKEA's app and firmware path are worth an extra hub. Choose the community Zigbee route only as a deliberate hobbyist experiment, preferably with Zigbee2MQTT, one exact regional model, and a return option. The hidden mode is interesting; it is not a dependable buying promise.
