The short answer: choose the control path before the brand

An integration is the software connection that lets Home Assistant talk to a device. Home Assistant supports the S, QV, Qrevo, and Saros families, including a current model such as the Saros 20. It can check and command the robot over your home network, but that does not make the setup cloud-free: setup and fallback use Roborock's service, maps and routines always come from the cloud, and blocking internet access disables its local connection.

Matter is the cross-brand control standard, not a separate radio in this case. The K11+ joins ordinary Wi-Fi, while Home Assistant acts as a Matter controller. Home Assistant OS with its official Matter Server app is the supported setup. The SwitchBot app may still be needed to update the robot, enable Matter, or obtain its pairing code. That setup dependency is different from sending every cleaning command through a cloud service.

Home Assistant added a common clean by area action in 2026.3 and a room-selection interface in 2026.5. Those controls appear only when the robot provides areas that Home Assistant can map. SwitchBot lists automatic cleaning, cleaning modes, return to base, and room selection for its Matter vacuums, but confirm the exact robot software and visible controls during the return window.

Apple household? SwitchBot documents adding the K11+ to Apple Home with Matter. Matter can let one device be shared with both Apple Home and Home Assistant when the robot and both controllers support that option.

SwitchBot Bluetooth is local too, but much more basic

The built-in SwitchBot Bluetooth integration supports the K11+, K10+ family, K20, S10, and S20. Home Assistant says this integration talks directly to devices and does not route control through SwitchBot Cloud. It can report the robot's state and battery, start cleaning, and send it back to the dock.

That is useful as a fallback or for a simple whole-home cleaning button, but it is not a substitute for the full Matter or vendor-app experience. Bluetooth range can require a Bluetooth proxy, a small Home Assistant relay placed near the dock. Importing an encrypted device's key may also involve a SwitchBot account if you do not enter the key manually. Roborock: more controls, but a real cloud dependency

The official Roborock integration is attractive because it can expose maps, cleaning state, fan and mop settings, dock sensors, maintenance information, and room cleaning on supported models. Home Assistant currently calls the S, QV, Qrevo, and Saros series fully supported. The Roborock Saros 20 is a concrete current example; its product page also lists Matter support.

The boundary needs to be stated plainly. Home Assistant uses the local network when it can, but the Roborock app and account are prerequisites. Cloud services discover the robot and supply connection information. Cloud fallback remains active, while maps and Roborock routines are always fetched online. Home Assistant explicitly says that a Roborock vacuum disconnected from the internet blocks its direct local connection.

There are therefore two distinct Saros 20 choices:

  • Native Roborock integration: choose this for the broadest maps, dock data, and model-specific controls. Accept that the route is hybrid local/cloud.
  • Matter integration: choose this when normal commands must work offline. Expect fewer controls and sensors than the native route, and verify that Matter is enabled in the exact regional model and current device software.

Do not add both routes merely because both are available. Roomba: a useful local path for older robots, not the new x05 line

Home Assistant's official iRobot integration communicates locally and lists the Roomba s9+, 980, 960, and 890 plus the Braava jet m6 as tested examples. Other older Wi-Fi models may work, but those named models are the safest claims. If one is already cleaning well, the local integration can extend its useful life without turning this into a new hardware purchase.

The warning matters more than the broad brand name: Home Assistant says the newer Roomba 105, 405, and 505 models do not work with this integration. Do not buy one of those “x05” models expecting the older local connection method. Credential retrieval can also need cloud access on some models, including the J7 path described in the documentation.

A Roomba allows one direct local messaging connection. When Home Assistant uses it continuously, the iRobot app can fall back to the cloud. That does not make the Home Assistant command cloud-controlled, but it is another example of why “local” should describe a specific path rather than the whole product.

Valetudo: fully local, deliberately advanced

Valetudo is a cloud replacement that runs on a rooted robot. Rooting means gaining administrator access to the small computer inside the robot so different software can be installed. Valetudo is not a Home Assistant add-on, not an integration from Home Assistant's community add-on store, and not simply a new mobile app.

After installation, the robot provides its own local web page and sends updates through MQTT, a lightweight way for smart devices and Home Assistant to exchange messages on the home network. Home Assistant can then discover the vacuum, map, sensors, and room-cleaning controls without a vendor account.

The compatibility list is exact by design. Current examples include the Dreame L10s Ultra—not the similarly named Gen 2—the Dreame L40 Ultra—not the AE or L40s variants—the Dreame X40 Ultra or X40 Ultra Complete, and the Eureka J15 Max Ultra. A nearby model name is not evidence of support.

Do not buy a new Roborock Q7 Max specifically for Valetudo. Valetudo warns that units produced from roughly the second quarter of 2024 can contain a different storage chip that is not rootable with the documented method, and the difference may only become visible after disassembly. Use Valetudo's current buying page and exact model entry before ordering anything.

Rooting changes the robot and makes you responsible for installation and updates. The tools and steps vary by model; some require opening the robot, while others do not. Valetudo warns that a failed procedure can leave the robot permanently unusable. A modification may also affect warranty or vendor service, depending on the model and local law. What does not count as confirmed official local support

  • A vacuum entity in Home Assistant: this is the robot control Home Assistant creates. It does not reveal whether the underlying connection uses the home network, Bluetooth, Matter, or a vendor cloud.
  • A community integration from HACS: HACS is Home Assistant's community store. Community work can be excellent, but it is not the same as a built-in integration or Works with Home Assistant certification. Read its current documentation for cloud use, account access, supported models, and update risk.
  • “Works with Alexa,” Google Home, or Apple Home: that badge does not prove a direct Home Assistant integration. For Apple Home, distinguish a direct Matter vacuum from Home Assistant's legacy HomeKit Bridge, which exposes a vacuum only as basic switches.

Decide which features must survive an outage

A useful buying list separates routine essentials from app extras:

  • Usually essential: start, pause, return to dock, battery, error state, and whole-home cleaning.
  • Often important: select a room, choose vacuum or mop mode, adjust cleaning power, and know when water, dust, or a brush needs attention.

Test the exact features you will automate.   1. Write the outage requirement first. Decide whether whole-home cleaning is enough, or whether room selection, maps, and dock controls must also remain available.
  2. Check the exact model. Use the current Home Assistant integration page, vendor page, and—only for Valetudo—the exact supported-robot entry. Match suffixes, region, and hardware notes.
  3. Update before setup. Install current robot software while the vendor setup path is still available. For Matter, confirm that the pairing code or option is visible rather than relying on an “upcoming” claim.
  4. Add one Home Assistant route. Start with Matter, native integration, Bluetooth, or Valetudo—not all of them. Name the robot and dock clearly.
  5. Map rooms when supported. Use the vacuum entity's area-mapping control, then test one low-risk room while someone is home.
  6. Test an internet outage. Disconnect the home's internet while leaving Wi-Fi and Home Assistant running. Try start, pause, room clean, and return to dock. Record which features remain.

A robot vacuum can hold a detailed floor map, and some models add obstacle photographs or remote camera features. The native Roborock integration fetches map data through Roborock's cloud. Matter may keep basic control local while leaving those richer functions in the vendor app. Review the exact model's privacy settings and disable camera or image features the household does not need.

Do the first several cleans while someone is home. Clear cords, small toys, liquid spills, and pet accidents; confirm drop sensors at stairs; and make sure the dock is stable.
